The Species of the Genus Tropheus

Lake Tanganyika is one of the most fascinating lakes in the world. The cichlids of Lake Tanganyika dominate the fish fauna, in number of species as well as in numbers of specimens. The species of the cichlid genus Tropheus are so specialized in feeding habits that they do not disperse beyond the rocky areas. As a result the fish of this genus has developed its own quite distinguishable colour variety for almost every single reef in the lake. Because the display of colour is an important factor in the courtship behaviour of these fish, the different varieties have developed beautiful colour and patterns. For the first time, all known colour varieties, over 120 including the latest, never pictured varieties, are described and illustrated. A 10 year survey by the author, Peter Schupke, has resulted in a comprehensive book in which the latest scientific methods have been included. For the aquarium hobyist all the necessary information for successful care and breeding of these beautiful species is provided.

The Haplochromines

Fifteen haplochromine species from Lake Kivu, a deep natural dam lake on the Rwandese-Zairean border, are described or redescribed. All species are endemic to the lake. Taxonomic novelties include the description of three new species. For each species relevant literature is discussed and a detailed morphological description and diagnosis given. A detailed colour description of live and preserved specimens is given separately for both males and females. Guide lines for determination of the sepcies are given.

Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat

This fourth, revised, edition of the definitive study of Lake Malawi cichlids discusses 843 species, 822 illustrated. The species are characterised by their habitat preference, distribution, and colouration. Almost all of these photographs were taken in the lake and show the fishes in their natural habitat.

Tanganyika Cichlids in their Natural Habitat

In this completely new treatment of the cichlids of Lake Tanganyika, more than 200 different species are characterized by their distribution, coloration, and habitat preferences. More than 920 photographs (the majority never published before) illustrate the cichlids from the entire lake; 683 photos (75%) were taken underwater and show the cichlids at their best: in their natural habitat.

The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi / Nyasa / Niassa

This is primarily a scientific book, in some ways a sequel to the 1989 revision of Lake Malawi haplochromines by Eccles and Trewavas, but not covering all the genera. It is a documentation of recent work by Jos Snoeks and colleagues, European and African, on the cichlids of the Lake, and includes a major revision of Copadichromis with descriptions of new species, a review of Nimbochromis, a study of the deep-water Placidochromis species, again with new taxa described, a review of the sifters (Lethrinops et al.), and chapters on biogeography and sampling. There is also a short overview of the non-cichlids. The illustrations include a large number of colour drawings, B/W photos (mainly of specimens) and a number of colour photos of live fish by Ad Konings. Not light reading, but an invaluable work of reference for anyone with a serious interest in Malawi cichlids.

Offshore Cichlids of Lake Malawi

This book, the first ever guide to the cichlid fishes of the offshore waters of Lake Malawi, shows that this habitat harbours a great diversity of little-known cichlid species. Aquarists will be fascinated by the wealth of previously-unknown brilliantly-coloured and bizarrely-shaped species. Information on distinguishing features, colour, size, distribution and abundance, commercial importance, diet, reproduction, and taxonomy are given for 199 species, 79 of which are presently undescribed. 186 colour and 44 black and white photographs illustrate all species.

Fish Communities in Lake Tanganyika

Since 1979 a Japanese-African research team has been studying the biology of fishes in the rocky littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika researching their behaviour, ecology, genetics and evolution with a view to clarifying the factors maintaining the exceptionally high species diversity found there. This book provides a comprehensive review of the major findings of these studies in Lake Tanganyika during the past two decades and provides a unique insight into the interactions within a tropical freshwater community. Partial contents : Phylogenetic relations and evolution of Tanganyikan cichlids; Trophic ecomorphology of Tanganyikan cichlids, Evolution of parental care and mating systems among Tanganyikan cichlids; Habitat use in cichlid fishes for breeding; Shell-brooding cichlid fishes of Lake Tanganyika; Early life histories of pelagic fishes. There are eight further chapters mostly on cichlid fishes. Text in English.

The Catfishes of Africa

African catfishes are a particularly diverse group of fishes. However, only a few of them have gained a permanent place in the aquarium hobby, mainly because they are inadequately known and have to date been imported only in limited numbers. This book should at least alleviate the first of these problems and demonstrate just how varied and interesting African catfishes are. This book is, as far as it is known, the first to present an overview of the entire African catfish group, and many of the photos illustrate the species in question for the very first time. New species are yet to be discovered and others may be known but remain undescribed. Includes much valuable information on habitats, care and spawning.
