Aristochromis Christyi

Aristochromis Christyi is a species of fish in the cichlidae family. It is found in Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Its natural habitat is freshwater lakes. , the only member of its genus Aristochromis.

Aristochromis Christyi are from the larger Haplochromis genus of Malawi cichlids. They are a preditory fish that can grow to around 12" however how big they grow depends on the size of the space in the tank. They are quite pieceful most of the time but will have the odd fight with another male of its kind.

Although they are a preditory fish they will only eat tank mates that they can fit in their mouths so it is very important not to mix these beauties with the small Mbuna family as this is what they hunt and eat in the wild.

While hunting you will often see them lean over to one side as they "eye up" their prey. If you notice this behaviour then you to can see their next meal. They will eat all other forms of food such as pellets, flake and sticks but make sure you provide them with fleshy foods such as prawns, mussels, cockels, shrimps even frozen whitebait once de-frozen. Unlike Mbuna they do not need lots of caves and rocks, they need open swimming space with the odd bolder or rock on the ground for breeding around. If you are interested in keeping Aristochromis Christyi please make sure that you are aware of their needs and can provide them with the correct enviroment.
